15 Parish Registers of England and Wales, St Paul's, Jarrow — Baptisms. ... According to these notes Jane's year of birth was not recorded in the register and her baptismal date is given as the same as her brother, Thomas, namely 15 October 1807. Thomas was clearly conceived out of wedlock but it seems unlikely that Jane who is recorded as the second child was as well; this makes it unlikely that she was baptised in 1807 as this note suggests. In all probability her year of birth and baptism should be 1808.

16 Ibid, St Paul's, Jarrow — Baptisms. Note of entry:...
Sarah (3rd child) dau of James Clark, enginewright & Hannah his wife baptized 3rd Oct 18?? — born 10th Sept 1811.

17 Ibid, St Paul's, Jarrow — Baptisms. Note of entry:...
Sarah (3rd child) dau of James Clark, enginewright & Hannah his wife baptized 3rd Oct 18?? - born 10th Sept 1811. ... These notes do not record the baptismal year for Sarah and her year of birth seems to conflict with the likely year of birth for her younger sister Hannah. Most likely, Sarah was born in 1809 or 1810.

The Southwick concern, however, is not the outcome of, and never had any connection with the small engine works commenced by his father, Mr W. Clark, at Farrington-row, Bishopwearmouth, where engines of considerable size and power were made. To Mr W. Clark is due the honour of having turned out the first tug-engine of the Wear. The engines for the Dragon and Neptune were made by him, vessels which will be remembered by the older inhabitants for their peculiar shape, having the appearance on deck of being nearly as broad as long. A great number of the pumping engines for collieries in the locality were made either by, or under his direction and amongst others that of the Humbledon-bill Water works, which was originally made for Fatfield Colliery."...

"Surprisingly enough the Thames seems to have been about the last river in the country to introduce steam tugs as it was not until 1832 that the Lady Dundas arrived from the Tyne and the Wear from Sunderland. The Wear was built in 1825 and was 67.7' long x 16.0 ' beam with a draught of 5' 6" and a registered tonnage of 33 tons. The Lady Dundas was back on the Tyne by 1835 — the only detail which survives of her is that her tonnage was 18. The London owners of these two vessels soon discovered that they had bought a pig in a poke and that they were so underpowered they could not tow any size of ship.".

The vessel, at present on stocks, is intended to be about 100 tons burthen, and is built for carrying iron ore from Loftus, in Yorkshire, to Hartlepool. She has been purchased by Mr George Foster, of Consett. The whole of the iron materials used in building this vessel are manufactured at the Derwent Iron Works.

There are two engines connected with the forge, one of 10-horse power, which is employed in driving the fan-blast, and the other of 20-horse power which is attached to the forge hammer. The engines were erected by Mr George Clark, and found to be perfect in their various motions. Several iron bars were forged for the use of the manufacturory in the presence of a number of scientific and practical gentlemen belong to the neighbourhood. Every variety of ironwork connected with the various departments of shipbuilding is intended to be manufactured at this forge.

LAUNCH OF AN IRON SCHOONER -- on Monday last a beautiful iron schooner, named the Loftus, was launched from the building yard of Mr George Clark, Wreath-quay. She is a strong well built vessel, and is allowed by good judges, on account of workmanship, strength, and beauty, to reflect great credit upon Mr Clark. She is the first iron vessel that has be built on the banks of the River Wear. The whole of the materials of which she is constructed have been manufactured by the Derwent Iron Company, of whom Mr George Forster, of ConsideΉ, owner of the vessel, is the manager. She is intended to carry iron in the coasting trade, between this country and France. In the evening a large party of gentlemen sat down to an excellent dinner, at the Odd Fellows' arms, Monkwearmouth to celebrate the occasion. Mr George Forster was called to the chair and Mr Fourdrinier, inventor of the patent safety apparatus for mines, officiated as vice-chairman. We understand that Mr Clark has received orders to build an iron brig, and also an iron steamboat, which will be commenced forthwith.

ΉThere was an ancient parish of Conside cum Knitsley in the area where Consett now lies and before the town became well established, the iron works and the immediate locality seemed to have been referred to as Conside.

NEW ENGINE WORKS AT SOUTHWICK -- Another of the large manufactories which give employment to many working men is about to be removed from Monkwearmouth. Mr George Clark, engine builder, has recently purchased an extensive plot of ground at Southwick, lying between the Crown road and the river, and formerly covered with shipbuilding works. The decay of wooden shipbuilding has left the ground unoccupied, and Mr Clarke has purchased it from Captain Stafford, for the purpose mentioned. A branch line from the proposed Hylton, Southwick and Monkwearmouth Railway will give the new works access to the North-Eastern Railway system while the projected river deepening will provide deep water carriage to and from the works.

. This Register entry gives no christian name for the child being baptised or its relationship to the parents nor does it give the date of birth, which is unusual for this church. However, it is known that Jane was born in 1819 so the entry is very likely for her baptism.

), Chapter 6 — Page 84. The only large engineering firm to survive the trade depressions of the 1880s and 1930s was Clarke, Chapman. This firm was started on the South Shore in the early 1860s by William Clarke; an engineer who had worked for Armstrong at Elswick. New premises were taken on St James Road in 1874. In the same year, Captain William Chapman, a new partner, joined the firm, followed three years later by C. A. Parsons. The manufacture of winches was the mainstay of the firm at first but Parsons experimented with turbines developing electricity and the firm also helped develop the carbon filament light bulb with J. W. Swan. Parsons left the firm in 1889. This now world famous firm concentrated on the production of marine auxiliary equipment until recent years when work on power stations led into nuclear engineering. Following a recent merger with John Thompson Ltd., the group is now one of the largest in the United Kingdom.

This IGI record is clearly at odds with the information from Catharine's gravestone which says that she was born on February 14, 1832. The actual parish register for All Saints Church has not been checked and it may well be that the year of her baptism was incorrectly transcribed.

Vaux v. Vaux
In this case a dissolution of her marriage with the respondent, Cuthbert Vaux, was sought by Anne Lockie Vaux, on the ground of his cruelty and adultery. The respondent denied the charges, and further pleaded condonation.
Mr. Inderwick, QC., and Mr Bargrave Deanne appeared for the petitioner; Mr. Bayford for the respondent. The parties were married in 1859, and there were five children of the marriage. Evidence was given in support of the petition, and the case stood on that evidence.
The COURT announced a decree nisi with costs.

540 Haltwhistle Echo and Weekly News (Published Haltwhistle.), May 30th, 1947. KILLED PIG WITHOUT A LICENCE

Bardon Mill Farmer Fined

A Haltwhistle rural councillor and farmer, Richard V. Green, of Whinshields (sic) Farm, Bardon Mill, was fined a total of £6 and ordered to pay £1 1s., costs at Haltwhistle Petty Sessions, on Thursday.

He was charged with slaughtering a pig without a licence at Whinshields on April 19th, and with failing to keep a record of the movement of the pig from Hexham to his own farm.

Pleading guilty to the slaughtering charge, Green admitted he killed a pig of the 13½ to 14 stones weight and had pickled it for bacon.

No application, said Mr J. S. Hart-Jackson, Hexham, for the Ministry of Food, had been made to the local food office for a licence to kill the pig.

Charged with failing to keep a record of the movement of the pig on his farm, Green said that though he had farmed for many years, he was not aware that a record had to be kept until an animal had been on the farm for 24 hours.

Supt. W. B. Jenner pointed out that if the animal was on the farm for five minutes its had to be recorded.

He was fined £5 for slaughtering and £1 for failing to keep a record. He was ordered to pay £1 1s., advocates' fee.

A miner, William Stoddart, of Peel Cottages, Bardon Mill, was fined £5 for slaughtering a 28 stone pig, on April 19th without a licence and pickling the carcas (sic) for bacon.

He was ordered to pay £1 1s., costs.

For conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty, when the enemy put down a concentrated bombardment of high explosive gas and sharpnel on the battery, lasting three and a-half hours, this officer kept his gun in action until it was over, the four other guns were damaged and the battery commander wounded, also several men. The tenacity and coolness which he showed set a fine example to all ranks.

Funeral today for Nigel Clark

The funeral takes place today, Wednesday, of Nigel Clark, who died suddenly while taking part in the Helford village regatta on August 25.

As reported in last week's Packet, Mr Clark, who had a home at Helford, collapsed after completing the veterans rowing race. The air ambulance was called but Mr Clark, 71, could not be saved.

The rest of the regatta was called off as a mark of respect to Mr Clark, who was one of the event's most dedicated supporters throughout its 37-year history.

A funeral service for Mr Clark's family and Cornish friends takes place at St Anthony-in-Meneage parish church at 3pm today. A service of thanksgiving will be held in London at a later date.
