There is clearly an error in Captain Lawrence-Archer's record of the monumental inscriptions in the Kingston Parish Churchyard in so far as Peter Espeut's inscription is concerned. We know from a legal document that has survived that Peter was alive and in St Domingue on 30 July 1798. It is also known that his wife Dorcas married again in May 1800 so Peter must have died sometime in late 1778 or in 1779. The probability is that the year was 1798, which has been mis-read or misreported as 1790, possibly, because the figure 8 on Peter's gravestone had become eroded with time and looked like the figure 0.

Interestingly enough, Burke's account of the family has Peter dying in 1796 which is also incorrect.

46 Captain J. H. Lawrence-Archer, Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies, Page 148 — Entry 339 for Kingston Parish Churchyard. Sacred to the memory of Virginia Fairfax, the beloved wife of Peter Alexander Espeut, Esqr., of this city, and daughter of Colonel Robert Munro Harrison, Consul-General of the United States of America for this island, born 28th August, 1821, died 5th November, 1841, aged 20 years and 69 days. — Also, Virginia Margaret Grosett, daughter of the above, born 25th October, 1839, died 7th January 1841, aged 14 months, & 15 days. This monument is erected by her affectionate surviving husband. This entry is followed by the following description "An elegant and classic Marble Tomb, enclosed by a railing, overgrown with flowers." and the comment "Verses follow. The Espeut family came to Jamaica with the French refugees from St. Domingo, in 1798."

The remark about the Espeut family coming to Jamaica in 1798 is clearly inaccurate as a further down this page (148) is the monumental inscription for Peter Espeut, senior, which says that he died on December 4th 1790.

Nineteen-Year-Old Pam Barton Becomes...
Golf Champion of Britain and America...

Winning both the British and American Golf Championships in one year is a, tremendous achievement for anyone - only one other woman has ever done it - and to do it at nineteen years old is even more spectacular. Pam Barton who belongs to Royal Mid-Surrey, played very fine golf in the thirty-six-hole final, beating Mrs. J. W. Crews 4 and 3 with a thirty-foot putt at the thiny-third hole. The double event was last won in 1909, by an English girl who is now an American, Mrs. Hard; the only other English victory in the American Championship was in 1913. Miss Barton, in fact, has made golf history, and added a noble item to the rather brief list of British international sport successes this year.
