Novr 19th — Robt Shute & Mrs Ann Furse at Dew.[?]. The title "Mrs" given to Ann Furse does not indicate that she had been previously married; ladies of rank were commonly given that title in those times. The words "at Dew." are something of a mystery. Perhaps, they indicate that Robert & Ann were married at a place other than the Church.

20 Ibid, Dolton, North Devon - Baptisms 1608 - 1758. Thomas's baptismal entry in the parish register is very cryptic. Not only is there no date on which the ceremony was performed but also his mother, Joan, is not referred to as Mrs Joan as she is in her other children's baptismal entries. The entries either side of Thomas's occurred in April and August.

59 Lyson, Magna Brittanica (Published 1822), St Giles in the Wood. Way, in this parish, was anciently the property of the de la Ways, of whom it was purchased by Pollard. In Risdon's time it belonged to Mr. Lewis Wellington: it is now the property of Rev. Peter Wellington Furse of Torrington and Halsdon, in the parish of Dolton, whose father married the daughter of Sir Peter Wellington, Esq., the last of the family.
. Lyson's notes on the Manor of Way are inaccurate in at least two respects. Peter Wellington was not a Knight and he was not the last of the family, being survived, as he was, by his son Lewis.

John Henry Furse son of P.W. and Mary Furse died Aug I. MDCCCLIV aged LIX. It is interesting to note that the date Mary Furse's year of death on this plaque is 1846 when the correct year was 1845, at least her death was registered & reported as occurring in that year. Moreover, had she died in December 1846 she would have been 87 years old and not 86 as is recorded on this plaque. Perhaps her son John, when he came in later years to erect the plaque, made the mistake or possibly the mason carving the inscription slipped in the extra numeral.

JOHNSON [post CORY], WILLIAM. Adm. at KING'S, a scholar from Eton, Feb. 24, 1842. [2nd] s. of Charles [William], of Torrington, Devon [connected with Sir Joshua Reynolds]. B. there Jan. 9, 1823. Matric. Easter, 1842; Chancellor's English medal, 1843; Craven Scholar, 1844; Camden medal 1844; B.A. 1846; M.A. 1849; Fellow, 1845-72. Assistant Master at Eton, 1845-72, where Lord Rosebery was one of his pupils. ' He will long be remembered as the most brilliant Eton tutor of his day' (G. W. Prothero, 'Memoir of Henry Bradshaw'). Took a leading part in the throwing open of King's, 1861-5, and contributed generously towards the creation of a fund for Exhibitions in Natural Sciences. Assumed the name of Cory, by deed poll, Oct. 17, 1872. Two years after inheriting an estate at Haldon, Devon, he resigned his fellowship of King's, and retired from Eton. Went to Madeira for the sake of his health and married there, in 1878, Rosa Caroline, dau. of the Rev. George de Carteret Guille, R. of Little Torrington, Devon, and had issue, a son. Returned to England, 1882, and resided in Hampstead, where he gave 'oral classical instruction' to ladies 'for his own sake as well as theirs.' Very short-sighted, he is said to have pursued a hen down Windsor Hill, under the belief she was his own lost hat. Died June 11, 1892, at 4, Pilgrim's lane, Hampstead.
