The annual meeting the Northampton Volunteer Rifle Corps took place on Monday evening the Guildhall.…… The Mayor then called upon the secretary to read the report of the committee.
"The Committee in presenting their first annual report, cannot but express their gratification at her Majesty's gracious acceptance of the services of the corps on the 1st February 1860. Under the rules, the the corps was enrolled as the 4th Company the Northamptonshire Volunteer Rifle Corps, and your committee are glad to state that 83 effective members have been sworn in. By the 5th rule the selection of the officers of the corps rests with the lord lieutenant of the county, who appointed the following gentlemen: viz., Dr. W. A. Barr, as captain ; Mr. W. G. Hollis, as lieutenant; and Mr. G. N. Wetton, as ensign. The captain, in further conformity with the 5th rule, appointed as sergeants, Messrs. Davis, Pidcock, Tomalin, and Trotman; as corporals, Messrs. J. C. Green, Hull, Jeffery, and H. Phipps; and buglers, Messrs. Barker and Betts." ...... "Thus formally constituted, the corps has proceeded its duties, drilling under the able instruction of Sergeant Major Francis, of the 48th Northamptonshire Militia, the hall of the Corn Exchange, which has been kindly and liberally placed at the service the corps the proprietors. This day the corps met for the first of the twelve rifle instruction drills prescribed by the War Office, having completed their manual and platoon exercise, and company and light infantry drill."…

At Moot Hall Police Court, Newcastle, Wednesday, Leslie Stallybrass, Three Mile Bridge, Gosforth, was summoned for having contravened the Swine Fever Order. - Sergt. Logan said he visited some premises at Wideopen with regard a suspected case of swine fever. He found that the sow had been removed to defendant's premises. Later, witness saw defendant, who had a well-kept register, he expressed regret not having made the necessary entry, and said it was purely an oversight. Defendant was able to give the date when the sow was received his premises.-The Bench imposed a fine of 20s.

Appointment. — Mr. D. Elkins Green, of Lichfield, has been successful in securing an appointment as second brewer at the Brewery of Messrs. Frederick Lencys, Wateringbury, near Maidstone. Mr. Green has for the past four and a half years served under Mr. B. Keeley, the head brewer the Lichfield Brewery Company, as pupil and improver. Mr. Green is a popular member of the Lichfield Rugby Football Club, and his services will be greatly missed by the club.
