ACTION
UNDER THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS ACT. Frederick James, of Newport-street,
was summoned for neglecting to contribute towards the support of his
son, James James, now detained in the Industrial school at Winchester.
The child had been sent to the Industrial School by order of the
magistrates, and defendant ordered to pay 1s. per week towards his
maintenance. This he had neglected to do till the arrears due amounted
to 12s. Superintendent Burt said he had given defendant time, but he
had not made good his payments. Defendant pleaded that he had been out
of work, and when in work he only earned 5s. per week, his eyes being
so weak. The Mayor said that a man who wasted all his substance in
drink deserved no compassion from that Bench and would get none.
Defendant said he could pay in a fortnight if the Bench would give him
that much time. The Mayor. — Very well; we will give you that, and you
may be perfectly sure that if you do not pay you will be sent to
Winchester gaol.

The
change in the Exeter Post Office by which Mr Spencer James, the

little or no surprise, and the announcement only confirms a statement
which appeared in this column many weeks ago that alterations in the
Post Office were contemplated. Notwithstanding the little friction
which has existed between Mr James and some of the employees, citizens
will regret the loss of a capable Government official, who always did
his duty by them, and one who has been for so many years associated
with the Civil Service in Exeter and Devonshire. [The report
