There are several burials for a William Kirby at Blakesley which are difficult to allocate to a specific person. This William is not mentioned in John Malsbury's Will of May 1774 in which he lists all the Kirby children of his neice Mary who were then alive. William would surely have also been included had he been alive, so the assumption is that he died not long after he was born.

In Memory of Sarah daughter of Will. & Sarah Kirby who died Feb. 20th 1776 aged 5 years and 5 months. There is some doubt about the correctness of this version of the inscription. If Sarah was baptised somewhere near the time of her birth, her age at the time of her death would have been 3 years and 5 months. Possibly, the numeral for the number of years is now indistinct and has been read as 5.

In Memory of Sarah 8th daughter of Will. & Sarah Kirby died Jan. 17th 1784 aged 7 years & 10 months. This inscription is at odds with the entry for Sarah's burial entry in the Parish Register because in the Parish Register Sarah is recorded as the second daughter of William and Sarah. There is something of a mystery about the children of William and Sarah (See their Marriage Notes) but it seems unlikely that they had 8 daughters and, moreover, it seems likely that had there been so many earlier daughters one of them would have been given their mother's name.

James Kirby, Maidford, Nov 5th, 45 years, Revd F H White Curate of Blakesley...
No: 68. It is not absolutely certain that the James Kirby of this burial is the son of James and Sarah Kirby. However, we know from the Will of James (senior) that he had had a son called James who had died leaving issue by the time the Will was drawn up (6th November 1824 — the day after James (Jnr) was buried). Moreover, James (Jnr) is referred to in his uncle William's Will of 1814. According to the Burial record of James was forty five years old when he died, this would place his birth in circa 1779. This would fit in with James's and Sarah's other children but the only James Kirby recorded in the Maidford Parish Register as being baptised around that time is attributed to the parents James Kirby and Mary who were farmers; it is possible, of course, that the baptismal record is incorrect and that the parents should have been stated as James Kirby & Sarah.

It is not proven that this Martin Kirby is the son of Martin Kirby of Blakesley and brother of William Kirby also, at some time, of Lillingstone Dayrell. However, no son by the name of Martin has been found to date (Jan 2003) for Martin & Ann Kirby of Blakesley but it seems very likely that they named one of their earlier sons, Martin. Additionally, Martin's likely year of birth, given that he was 27 years of age at the time of his death, is 1778 and this fits in well with the births of Martin's & Ann's other children. Furthermore, we know that Martin's & Ann's son William was working at Lillingstone Dayrell for some time because that parish was given as his abode in his joint application for a Grant of Administration in 1811 in relation to his father's Will.

Witnesses: Fredk Bayliss, Martha Davis. Joseph gave his age here as 31 years. Having been born in April 1807 he was actually 41 years old and had obviously decided to reduce it by 10 years into order, no doubt, to make him seem more eligible; it was a fiction which he maintained (officially at least) for most of his life.
