Julia Eliza Bancroft

  • Born: 25 Aug 1820, Kingston, Jamaica 2
  • Baptised: 19 Aug 1823, Kingston Parish Church, Jamaica 3
  • Marriage (1): Major John O'Flanagan on 16 May 1854 in St. Andrew's Church, Kingston, Jamaica 1
  • Died: 15 May 1858, Grange Cottage, Fermoy, co. Cork aged 37 4

Little information has survived about Julia. Helena — her only child to reach adulthood — was only three years old when her mother died so, unsurprisingly, she makes little mention of her in the notes she left about the family, restricting herself to writing, "Julia Eliza Bancroft was the other daughter of Dr and Mrs Bancroft. She married Lt John O'Flanagan afterwards Major O'Flanagan, late 9th Regt. They had 2 daughters: one died in childhood, the other (myself) Helena Ursula Bancroft O'Flanagan is still alive." 5

Interestingly enough, Julia is mentioned rather uncharitably by Catherine Bancroft in her letter to Julia's younger brother William in February 1852; it appears that like her sister Augusta, she was easily worried about reports or signs of ill health. In that matter, of course, she followed the "fashion" of upper-class ladies of that time but sadly, in her own case, she was probably wise to be worried, dying as she did at a relatively young age of 37.

Julia married Major John O'Flanagan, son of John Fitch O'Flanagan and Eliza Glissane, on 16 May 1854 in St. Andrew's Church, Kingston, Jamaica.1 (Major John O'Flanagan was born on 22 Jan 1823 in Fermoy, co.Cork 7 and died on 31 Mar 1893 in 6, Llanion Terrace, Pembroke Dock, Pembroke 8.)
