• Education: Jan 1917-Dec 1924, St. Paul's School, London, SW11. ⁵²³ ^,585 Attended prep school, Colet Court, and then entered St. Paul's as a "silver fish" scholar. Apart from the fact that he is accredited as "s. of sch. mistress of Cockermouth" and that he left from "Woolwich A" [presumably a school house], no other details of his time there have survived. He was in his House rugger XV.

• Occupation: 1925.1938, Various places. ⁵²³ On leaving St Paul's School, Roland joined the Eagle Star Insurance Co. in London where he worked for about two years before joining the Asiatic Petroleum Co.. Working for APC took him to such places as Formosa and the Philippines before he resigned from the Company and returned to the UK in 1938. It is said that it was his concerns about the vulnerability of the Philippines to attack by the Japanese which led him to leave his job there.

• Military Service: 1938.1945, Various places. ⁵²³ Joined the TA Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1938 as 2nd Lt.. Served with the Eighth Army in North Africa ending up as Deputy Quarter Master for the Middle East with the rank of Lt. Col.

• Occupation: 1945.1969, Various places. ⁵²³ After the war, Roland joined the Colonial Service and served in the Gold Coast and Nigeria in the run-up to their independence. On retirement from the Colonial Service in 1967, he was for two years Development Officer for Sunderland before finally retiring in 1969 to Temple Sowerby in Cumbria where he died suddenly one day in March 1974, while working in his kitchen garden, just a few days after his 67th birthday.
