Major Lewis Mackenzie
- Born: 20 Aug 1788, Lambeth, Surrey 3
- Marriage (1): Nancy Bancroft on 16 Oct 1820
in St Mary-le-Bone, Middlesex 1 2
- Died: 30 May 1853, 12 Southwick Crescent,
Hyde Park, Middlesex aged 64 4
Lewis
chose to make a career in the Army. He first appears in surviving
London and Edinburgh Gazettes in May 1805 when he was c. 17 years of
age where he is recorded as a Cornet being promoted by purchase to a
Lieutenant in the 9th Regiment of Light Dragoons (Queen's Royal
Lancers). In 1807, he is promoted once again by purchase to be Captain
of a Troop in that regiment.
In 1812, he switched to the 63rd Regiment of Foot (West Suffolk) and in
May 1820 he moved, by exchange , from the 63rd to the 2nd Regiment of
Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) to which he was attached when he married.
A year later he was promoted to Major and settle at that rank until he
resigned or was retired; how long he remained in the Army has not been
discovered.
Lewis' father was the second son of the late Sir Lewis Mackenzie, of
Scatwell who died in 1756. Over a century later, in 1884, the baronetcy
came into the hands of Lewis' then surviving eldest son, James, as
others in line for the title had failed to provide surviving heirs.
When Lewis died in June 1853, he left the leasehold of his house and
all his other assets to Nancy. 5 6 7

<Oct 1799> in Marylebone, London and died on 22 Jan 1870 at
Kensington, Middlesex 8.)

The Marquis de Montauban's family once owned a castle in the
mountainous area
of the Belledonne, which they are said to have abandoned in 1789; they
were
staunchly royalist during the revolution and probably sought refuge in
London.
This Marquis was presumably a good friend of either Lewis or Nancy.
Mark MacKenzie
is Lewis's older brother (the middle of three sons). Denny Ashburnham
was
Nancy's stepfather and was the son of the 5th Bt Sir William
Ashburnham.
Nothing is known about Mary Copley, Caroline Maria Barker or Nancy
Dickins.
