1. William Elkins 1 was born <1666>,1 died in Oct 1727 1 at age 61, and was buried on 12 Oct 1727 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..2

General Notes: There is an Elkins family story that says the first Elkinses came to Buckinghamshire from Wiltshire to escape retribution at the "Bloody Assizes" there, they having been implicated in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.

There may be some truth in this story and the records do show that there were quite a number of Elkinses in Wiltshire in the 17th-century. However, there were Elkinses in Buckinghamshire well before that time as the Will of a William Elkins of Shenley, a shepherd, shows; it was proved at the Archdeaconry of Buckingham on July 24th 1640. It mentions two sons, William and John, and a daughter, Elizabeth; William and Elizabeth are names which are to be found in later generations of the Elkins family but it has not yet (2003) been possible to connect the Shenley family with the one which farmed for three generations at Stantonbury.

The task of tracing the Elkinses has been made more difficult because, in earlier times, they belonged to the independent church movement and did not have their children baptised in accordance with the Church of England's rites. Accordingly, only their marriages and deaths are to be found recorded in the local parish registers. Later, when independent churches became more established, some of their baptisms are to be found in those churches registers.

William Elkins of Shenley is interesting because his Will shows that, even in the 17th-century, this branch of the Elkins family was sufficiently prosperous to have assets (in the form of land) to leave to the next generation. The William Elkins of this Note was also reasonably prosperous, or so it seems from his Will, and future generations were to build on that success.

This Will was proved on 6th May 1748 by Martha Elkins,Richard Wren and Samuel Sharman as joint Executors.

William married Martha Litchfield,1 daughter of Francis Litchfield and Elizabeth ———, on 12 Apr 1730 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..8 Martha was baptised on 11 Feb 1704/05 in St Mary of the Assumption, Moulsoe, Bucks,13 died on 29 Nov 1775 14 at age 70, and was buried on 20 Dec 1775 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.15

Some things about her life:

• Will: 16 Mar 1772. 16,17,18 Martha made her second son, Thomas, her sole executor and left him the residue of her estate after giving her other children various legacies. She left £10 to her eldest son William, two guineas to her eldest daughter, Elizabeth, and £50 each to her daughters, Lydia, Sarah, Martha and Catherine. She also left Catherine, who was living with her then, her bed, bed linen and household furniture. Martha and Catherine were not married when Martha, senior, made her Will — Martha, junior, was keeping house for her brother Thomas at that time — but both did marry subsequently; in Catherine's case seven months later.

It may seem surprising that William and, particularly, Elizabeth received such small legacies. However, on Martha's death William came into some property in Great Linford which had been left to him by his father with a life interest for his mother and also had his father's farming and grazing business in Stantonbury so she probably thought that he was well provided for.

By the time Martha came to make her Will, her daughter Elizabeth was married for the second time having been, it appears, comfortably provided for under the Will of her first husband. It is possible, therefore, that Martha might have felt that Elizabeth was not in need of additional funds; of course, it could also have been that they did not get on very well.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 6 F    i. Elizabeth Elkins 19,20 was born <1731>,1 died on 19 Sep 1790 21 at age 59, and was buried on 23 Sep 1790 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.22

7 F    ii. Lydia Elkins 25 was born <1732> 1 and was buried on 3 Jun 1733 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..25

+ 8 M    iii. William Elkins 20 was born <1734>,1 died in 1801 in Bedfordshire at age 67, and was buried on 4 Feb 1801 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..26

+ 9 F    iv. Lydia Elkins 20 was born <1737> 1 and was buried on 20 Feb 1810 in St Andrew's Church, Great Linford, Bucks..28

+ 10 F    v. Martha Elkins 1,20 was born <1741> and was buried on 6 Dec 1812 in St Mary's Churchyard, Mentmore, Bucks.30

   11 F    vi. Sarah Elkins 20 was born <1745>.1

Sarah married William Roberts 33 on 29 Jun 1768 in Little Linford Chapel, Bucks.32

General Notes: Yeoman of Hanslope

12 M    vii. Thomas Elkins 20 was born <1745> 1 and was buried on 18 Jan 1809 in St Mary's Churchyard, Mentmore, Bucks.34

General Notes: Thomas's mother's Will, of which he was the sole executor, describes him as a Yeoman of Leabourn in the parish of Mentmore. In 1772 when his mother made her Will he was living there with his sister Martha who was, presumably, keeping house for him. Martha eventually married a local man in 1778 at the rather mature age of 37. This might have been because William had found himself a wife but there is no evidence of this in the parish registers of Mentmore or of there being any offsprings of such a union. 35

+ 13 F    viii. Catherine Elkins 1 was born in 1748,36 died on 5 Jan 1793 37 at age 45, and was buried on 10 Jan 1793 in All Saints, Milton Keynes, Bucks.38

5. Mary Elkins .5

Mary married Richard Saunders.5

6. Elizabeth Elkins 19,20 was born <1731>,1 died on 19 Sep 1790 21 at age 59, and was buried on 23 Sep 1790 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.22

Elizabeth married Joseph Lancaster,19 son of Thomas Lancaster and Ann Manning, on 3 Jan 1753 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..40 Joseph was baptised on 9 Feb 1725/26 in St Andrew's Church, Great Linford, Bucks. 41 and was buried on 7 Feb 1764 in St Andrew's Church, Great Linford, Bucks..42 Another name for Joseph was Joseph Lankister.19

Marriage Notes: Joseph and Elizabeth do not appear to have had any surviving children as Joseph makes no mention of any in his Will and much of his residual estate is left to his nephews and nieces. It may be that they had children who died young — they were after all married for 11 years — but there is no record of such children in the Parish Registers for Great Linford. 43

General Notes: Described as a "Dairyman" at the time of his marriage in 1753.

Elizabeth next married Jonathan Abbott on 6 Mar 1765 in Little Linford Chapel, Bucks.24 Jonathan was born <1743>, died on 12 Feb 1793 44 at age 50, and was buried on 17 Feb 1793 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.45

Marriage Notes: Though Elizabeth bore her first husband no children, she and Jonathan had three daughters two of whom died in infancy and the other survived unmarried until she was 34 years old.

Though they lived in the parish Little Linford, at least during Jonathan's working life, they had their first and third daughters buried in All Saints Church at Milton Keynes and they themselves and their middle daughter Martha were also buried there. It is probable that they had moved to Milton Keynes by the latter part of their lives, possibly after Elizabeth's mother, Martha, died. 46,47

Children from this marriage were:

15 F    i. Elizabeth Abbott 46 was baptised on 27 Apr 1766 in Little Linford Chapel, Bucks 48 and was buried on 6 Jul 1766 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.49,50

17 F    iii. Suzanna Abbott 46 was baptised on 23 Mar 1772 in Little Linford Chapel, Bucks 54 and was buried on 26 Apr 1773 in All Saints Churchyard, Milton Keynes, Bucks.55,56

Some things about his life:

• Will signed: 22 Apr 1797, Potsgrove, Bedfordshire. 57 William drew up his last Will four years before he died making his wife Betty his executrix and his two sons, William and Joseph, executors; they were also the trustees of his estate.

He left his children the following legacies:- William £30 and Joseph, Elizabeth, Lydia and Catherine £100 apiece all to be paid 12 months and a day after his death. His married daughters, Mary and Martha, received nothing.

He left his wife a life interest in the rest of his estate, the principal asset of which being a cottage with an orchard in the village of Great Linford, Buckinghamshire, that had been left to him by his father. On his wife's death that property was to pass to his elder son William and any other assets remaining were to be divided equally amongst the survivors of his two sons and five daughters.

William was particularly generous, considering usual treatment of widows who remarried in those days, as he requested that his wife's income should continue even if she did. In the event she did not, despite surviving another 21 years or so.

William married Elizabeth Sheen,27 daughter of Thomas Sheen and Mary ———, on 20 Feb 1754 in Thornton, Bucks.27 Elizabeth was baptised on 20 Jul 1730 in Thornton, Bucks,27 died in Jun 1822 in Daventry, Northants. 1 at age 91, and was buried on 28 Jun 1822 in St Peter's Church, Stantonbury, Bucks..58

Lidy married George Rawlins,33 son of John Rawlins and Jane Clerk, on 12 Sep 1759 in Little Linford Chapel, Bucks.29 George was born <1734> in Great Linford, Bucks, and was buried on 5 May 1784 in St Andrew's Church, Great Linford, Bucks..73

10. Martha Elkins 1,20 was born <1741> and was buried on 6 Dec 1812 in St Mary's Churchyard, Mentmore, Bucks.30

General Notes: Prior to her marriage, Martha kept house for her brother Thomas at Leabourn in the parish of Mentmore. It may be that her brother Thomas married some time in the latter part of the 1770s and that she found herself no longer needed and as a result accepted Bernard's offer of marriage. Whatever the case, she did marry quite late in life (aged about 37 years) and the consequence was that she and Bernard were only able to have three children. 75

Martha married James Kirby, son of William Kirby and Unknown, on 31 Dec 1788 in Haversham, Buckingham.68 James was born in 1767, died on 15 Jun 1825 in Towcester, Northants 121 at age 58, and was buried on 20 Jun 1825 in St Lawrence's Church, Towcester, Northants.122

General Notes: For many years a baker in Towcester. 123

Some things about his life:

• Will signed: 9 Dec 1810, Towcester, Northants. James appointed his two friends Thomas Pinkard of Grimscote & John Wait of Litchborough as executors and trustees of his Will and he instructed them to sell two pieces of land that he had in the the parish of Towcester in order to pay off his debts; they were also empowered, if needs be, to sell off his hay, sheep, cows or pigs or any other of his goods and chattels in order to pay these debts. The debts were money borrowed from Thomas himself and his son Richard and also a Mr Robert Cockerill & John Malsbury Kirby the attorney of Towcester. He had also borrowed money from his brother-in-laws William & Joseph Elkins but he specifically instructed that this debt should not be repaid for reasons unstated — possibly he no longer got on with them.

His debts having been paid, he left everything else to his wife Martha which consisted of mainly the house and materials and equipment associated with his bakery business & shop, he also made her executrix acting jointly with his two friends. Initially, he wanted his son Thomas to take over the bakery business when he reached the age of 21 but in a codicil about 15 years after he had first made his Will, he revoked that wish and specified that he wanted his wife, Thomas & daughter Susannah to run the business jointly until Martha died. In the event, Thomas does not appear to have survived and Martha & Susannah and her husband ran the business for many more years.

• Probate Granted: 27 Jul 1825, Towcester, Northants. On the 27 July 1825 Martha Kirby of Towcester widow one of the executors named in the within Will was then sworn well and faithfully to perform the same and that the deceased at the time of his death (which happened on the 14th of June last) was not possessed of goods chattels and credits to the value of four hundred and fifty pounds all power be reserved for the other executors when &c. before me... Marriage Notes: Thomas kept on the baking & confectionery business in Towcester for some years after Susannah died and took on a housekeeper called Mary Ward whom he married in the autumn of 1871. Despite being 16 years younger than Thomas, Mary died a few years before him in 1893.

53 F    vi. Sarah Kirby was baptised on 3 Dec 1800 in St Lawrence's Church, Towcester, Northants.

54 M    vii. Thomas Kirby died before 1841.

24. Joseph Elkins 1,69 was born in 1767,1 died in Great Linford, Bucks,, and was buried on 23 Jan 1830 in Gayhurst, Bucks..70

General Notes: There is no record of what Joseph did in Gayhurst but most likely he either assisted his father-in-law as a grazier or was one on his own account. Whatever the case, Joseph was the residual beneficiary of his father-in-law's Will and that inheritance combined with his wife's inheritance from her grandfather probably made them quite comfortably off. Sadly, Joseph left no Will so it has not been possible to assess his worth.

It is strange, given the tradition of the Elkinses in the matter of Wills, that Joseph appears to have died intestate, the more so, because no one applied for a grant of administration to take over any of his assets after his death. One explanation of this may be that he made over all his assets to his eldest son Eli before he died and therefore there would have been no need to make a Will. As one of his granddaughters is quoted as saying that he "used to swing on the gate with the children" by which she was implying that he was childish in his ways, it may be, therefore, that his mental faculties had deteriorated to such an extent in later life that he was incapable of running his affairs.

Joseph, Mary and their unmarried children seem to have continued to live in Gayhurst until Mary died in 1820, after that the family moved to Great Linford where they acquired or took on a farm of about 370 acres near the green in the village which later came to be called Green Farm; it was the largest farm in Great Linford. Sadly, nothing of it has survived the growth of MIlton Keynes in the latter part of the 20th century. By then Joseph was in his fifties and he, Eli and Thomas probably ran the farm until Joseph became unable to play an active part, thereafter Eli and Thomas ran it until the end of their lives.

Joseph married Mary Kilpin,65 daughter of Nicolas Kilpin and Mary Tarry, on 1 Dec 1791 in Gayhurst, Bucks..71 Mary was born <Oct 1770>, was baptised on 10 Oct 1770 in Gayhurst, Bucks.,129 and was buried on 25 Nov 1820 in Gayhurst, Bucks..130

Marriage Notes: Joseph seems to have brought non-conformist religious beliefs to the marriage as all his and Mary's children were baptised in the recently established Independent Chapel in nearby Newport Pagnell and not in their local parish church of Gayhurst. Interestingly enough, the children's dates birth were at some time recorded en bloc in the parish register of Gayhurst.

General Notes: Mary and her cousin Mary Tarry were the main beneficiaries of her grandfather William Tarry's, Will. Her legacy being £100 and a half share of the rent from certain property in North Crawley. One of her great-granddaughters later (1906) described her as being an "heiress" so there was obviously a family legend about her wealth.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 55 F    i. Mary Elkins 131 was born on 6 Mar 1792,131 was baptised on 6 Mar 1792 in St Peter's Church, Stoke Goldington, Bucks, and died before 1851.

57 F    iii. Elizabeth Elkins 131 was born on 20 Jan 1795 131 and was buried on 22 Oct 1809 in Gayhurst, Bucks..134

58 M    iv. Joseph Elkins 131 was born on 3 Jul 1797,131 died in Jul 1824 in Potterspury, Northants at age 27, and was buried on 20 Jul 1824 in Gayhurst, Bucks..135

59 F    v. Catharine Elkins 131,136 was born on 23 Jun 1799,131 was baptised on 8 Aug 1799 in Great Meeting Chapel (Independent), Newport-Pagnell, Bucks,136 and died in 1859 in Newport Pagnell, Bucks 1 at age 60.

Catharine married William Worley 1,138 on 9 Dec 1819 in Gayhurst, Bucks..137 William was born <1794> in Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, died in Sep 1869 in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire 139 at age 75, and was buried on 21 Sep 1869 in St James the Great, Hanslope, Bucks.140

Marriage Notes: William and Catharine's children have so far (2006) remained elusive. There is mention of William and sons in George Obaldeston's autobiography Squire Obaldeston but none of them were living with William at the time of the 1841 Census and there are no likely candidates recorded in that Census or the subsequent one in 1851. Additionally, had any daughters survived to 1841 they would probably have been no more than 20 years of age and, likewise, they are not with William or Catharine at that time and, again, no other likely candidates can be found in that Census.

General Notes: William seems to have spent most of his working life farming in Northamptonshire. Whether or not he moved from one tenancy to another during that time has not yet been discovered but by 1841 he was living in a small hamlet called Potcote near Cold Higham; unfortunately, the Census record does not mention his occupation at that time. Unlike many farmers in those days, William seems to have given up farming by the time he was in his middle fifties and the family (or at least Catherine) was by then living in Buckinghamshire at Castle Thorpe.

There are two stories about William both of which are probably apocryphal which have come down from Amelia Green (née Kirby). The first concerns a new hunter that William had acquired; he was an able horseman and a keen follower of the hunt. William rode it over to Pury Lodge at Potterspury one day to show it to his sister-in-law Ann Kirby and the story goes that he rode the horse up the fine, wide, oak staircase in that house so that Ann, who was confined to bed at the time, could see it close to. It is said that she successfully persuaded him not to ride it down again much to everyone's relief.

Whilst it is quite likely that William might have wanted to show off a new acquisition to his sister-in-law, after all Ann Kirby was his wife's nearest sister so the families probably saw quite a lot of each other, and whilst, doubtless, William, as an expert horseman, was quite able and daredevil enough to ride a horse up a flight of stairs, it is extremely doubtful that the Kirby family ever lived at Pury Lodge where the event is supposed to have taken place. Interestingly enough, there are few houses in the part of Northamptonshire where the Kirbys lived where such a feat would have been practicable so in a roundabout way it appears to confirm the Kirby family's presence at Pury Lodge, yet all the other evidence suggests that they never lived there.

The second story is best told in Richard Green's words who passed down the tale. 'At one time my great great uncle Worley, who used to hunt such a lot, fell on such hard times that he could not afford it. One morning, while on foot, he saw the meet coming towards him. He felt ashamed so he climbed up a tree hoping that he would not be seen but the Master, Osbaldeston, had spotted him. "Come down Worley" said he, "I have asked Her Royal Highness's permission to present you to her" (there was a Princess hunting with the Pytchley that morning). Worley came down from the tree and was presented. "Come to breakfast with us" said Osbaldeston, "and I don't like to see you walk to a hunt breakfast so up you get". Worley got up on to Osbaldeston's horse while he walked alongside.'

William was certainly known to George Osbaldeston who writes of him in his autobiography: "I must mention here that Worley was one of the most respectable farmers in the whole county; he and his sons used to constantly come out with my hounds when I hunted Northamptonshire." Their paths would have first crossed when Osbaldeston was Master of the Pytchley Hunt between 1828 and 1834; the Pytchley country then encompassed most of Northamptonshire though the kennels were sited in Brixworth on the then Northampton to Market Harborough turnpike. Whether or not William ever fell on such hard times that he was not able to afford a suitable horse or horses with which to hunt, and whether or not any female member of the Royal family ever ventured out hunting with the Pytchley in those days, is difficult to say; Osbaldeston certainly makes no mention of any Royal personages in his account of his time with the Pytchley.

Osbaldeston, himself, mentions William in connection with the substitution of a horse in the 1844 Derby. The story centres round a horse called Running Reign. He was trained at Newmarket and had won a stake of some value at one of the Spring Meetings and was presumably a three-year-old in order to qualify for the Derby but in fact he never ran at Epsom Downs that year because a more mature horse called Maccabæus was substituted in his place. There had been no suspicion about Running Reign's age but, to use Obaldeston's words "..... nor would it ever have been buzzed about except through an old Northamptonshire farmer identifying the [substituted] horse on Epsom Downs." The old Northamptonshire farmer was, of course, William who was, incidentally, about 50 years of age at the time.

What had happened was that the owners of Running Reign had arranged for the proposed substitute to be kept by William in Northamptonshire prior to coming into training, hoping thereby to avoid any suspicion and make detection more difficult. Needless to say, they had told William that the horse that in his care was called Running Reign but by somehow he had discovered that the horse was really known as Maccabæus and was, in fact, a four-year-old.

It appears that William seldom attended the Derby but that year, either by chance or, perhaps, because he was concerned about being implicated in the "plot", did so and on seeing the supposed Running Reign stripped before the start of the race and recognising him as the horse that he had looked after, exposed the substitution. Though the race went ahead and was, indeed, won by Running Reign's substitute, William's outburst had put the authorities on the scent and few months later a case was brought by Lord George Bentinck against the owners which was heard in Westminster Hall and at which William's evidence was decisive.

George Osbaldeston (1787-1866), sportsman. Renowned for many remarkable feats for wagers, particularly in shooting and distance riding; an outstanding horseman; Master of several packs of foxhounds, which he took great interest in breeding and with which he hunted mostly in Leicestershire with the Quorn (1817-1821 & again (1823-1828) and in Northamptonshire with the Pytchley (1828-1834).141,142

General Notes: Eli and his brother Thomas farmed Green Farm at Great Linford, which had been purchased or acquired by their father when the family left Gayhurst. Green Farm was the largest farm in Great Linford village being about 370 acres when the Elkins had it. After Eli died in 1877, a young farmer called John Dover took it on.

Ann married John Malsbury Kirby,202 son of Thomas Kirby and Amelia Allen, on 27 Jan 1825 in St Andrew's Church, Great Linford, Bucks..152 Malsbury was baptised on 25 Aug 1793 in St Mary's Church, Hardmead, Bucks,203 died on 3 Jan 1837 in Paulerspury, Northampton 202 at age 43, and was buried on 7 Jan 1837 in St Nicholas's Church, Potterspury, Northants.204,205,206

General Notes: Malsbury was a farmer who for most of his adult life farmed land belonging to the Earl of Pomfret's estate in the parish of Paulerspury in Northamptonshire where he lived and died and where all his children were born and baptised.

The 1820 Paulerspury Property Map shows Malsbury owning a house with a garden amounting to 1 rood & 28 poles (a bit under ½ an acre); the house and outbuildings are still there (2005). The Land Tax Assessment (LTA) records for Paulerspury parish from 1825 to 1832 — the records do not extend beyond 1832 — show that, in addition to the one he occupied himself, he at one time owned another house in the parish that he let; the records also show that he was paying £131 per annum for the land that he was farming. Given an average rental cost of £1.15 per acre, which appears to have been about the going rate in the district at that time, his acreage would have been about 115, about half the size of his father's farm at Moor End. Later, of course, after his father died in 1834, he inherited some buildings and land in the parishes of Weedon Beck & Collingtree but it is doubtful that he farmed those himself.

There is a family story that Malsbury and Ann lived for a time at Pury Lodge (otherwise Potterspury Lodge) and there is another family story that seems to corroborate the Pury Lodge one. This involves one of Ann Kirby's brothers-in-law, William Worley, who, so the story goes, rode a new hunter up the staircase there in order to show it off to her when she was unwell and unable to come downstairs; the broad, oak staircase there would have allowed such a feat of horsemanship and Pury Lodge is, probably, one of the few houses in the district with such a staircase.

Pury Lodge during Malsbury and Ann's married life was owned by the Mordaunt family of Walton Hall, Warwickshire; it is situated in the parish of Potterspury, hence its alternative name of Potterspury Lodge. As far as has been discovered from the LTA records from 1825 to 1832 for Potterspury parish and from other sources, the Pury Lodge farm was let to a John Kendall who is recorded in the LTA records as being in occupation during that period and who is to be found living there at the time of the 1841 Census; it is to be supposed, therefore, that he and his family had lived in the house since taking on the farm in the 1820s. In view of this and the fact that all six of the Kirby children were born in Paulerspury between 1826 and 1836 it seems improbable that the Kirbys ever lived at Pury Lodge. Moreover, Malsbury described himself as a Yeoman of Paulerspury in his Will of July 1835 and his burial entry in the parish register of Potterspury gave his abode as "Paulerspury", which places him very firmly in Paulerspury towards the end of his life; that he was buried at Potterspury is because the Kirby family vault was in the church there.

It would be interesting to know who originated the stories about Pury Lodge. Richard James Green (1880-1978) who passed them down knew his grandmother Amelia Green (née Kirby) as she was alive during the first twenty three years of his life. She was just ten years old when her father Malsbury died but she would have been quite old enough to know where the family had lived and possibly about William Worley's escapade, so it may be that she, or perhaps her son Eli (Richard's father), was tempted to be a little creative in telling them. There is no doubt that Richard Green accepted the stories absolutely when they were told to him; indeed, so convinced was he of the truth of them that he paid a special visit to Pury Lodge in 1936 in the hope of being able to see round the house and view the staircase; the owner George Beale was happy to oblige. 207,208,209,210,211

Some things about his life:

• Will signed: 29 Jul 1835, Northamptonshire. 212 Malsbury left his wife an annuity of £30 per annum and an interest in all his household goods, furniture, chattels, etc., during her lifetime provided she did not remarry. The annuity was to be charged on the rents that he received from the property that he had inherited from his father in Weedon Beck & in Collingtree. All his other assets were to be liquidated and the proceeds invested in government or other secure stock and held in a trust for the benefit of his children.

Malsbury appointed his brother Edmund, his brother-in-law Eli Kirby and his cousin John Malsbury Cooke, who was an attorney in Towcester, as executors and trustees of his Will & as guardians for his children during their minorities.

• Probate Granted: 23 Feb 1837, Northamptonshire. 213 Probate was granted to Edmund Kirby, Eli Elkins & John Malsbury Cooke who swore that Malsbury's estate was not more than £1500.

Some things about her life:

• Grant of Administration: 26 Apr 1901, London, England. 297 Effects: £360

Amelia married Joseph Coghlan Green,298 son of George Washington Green and Mary Coghlan, on 26 Mar 1849 in Independent Chapel, Towcester, Northamptonshire.220 Joseph was born on 17 Apr 1807 in Youghal, Cork, Ireland and died on 6 Nov 1875 in 17 Prince's Street, Northampton 299 at age 68.

Marriage Notes: At the time of their marriage, both Joseph and Amelia were living in Towcester. They were married at the newish (built in 1845) Independent Chapel in Meeting Lane, which was later to become the Roman Catholic Church in the town.

Joseph gave his profession as "surgeon" and his age as 31; this was 10 years less than his actual age in March 1849, which was 41. In the subsequent Censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871, he continued to be inaccurate about his age, reporting it as 10 years [or in 1861, 13 years] less than it actually was at those dates.

It may be that Joseph felt that Amelia would be unhappy about marrying a man who was nearly 20 years her senior and so reduced the gap but having been untruthful about his age at the time of his wedding, when the 1851 Census was carried out two years later, he found himself in the position of having to keep up the deception. Clearly, Amelia discovered his true age later on in their marriage as his gravestone shows him as having been born in the correct year, 1807. 298,300

Children from this marriage were:

139 M    i. John Malsbury Kirby Green 309 was born in Jan 1850 in High Street, Towcester 309 and died on 27 Nov 1850 in High Street, Towcester.310

Durham 312 at age 54, and was buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Chester Road, Sunderland. The cause of his death was heart failure - prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement) - Ascites.

Medical Notes: Whist living in Worcester Eli's health deteriorated and he was advised to leave the enervating climate of the Severn river; he choose to go to Sunderland, Co. Durham.

The term "Ascites" in the list of Eli's "causes of death" refers to an abnormal collection of fluid within the abdomen. 313

DEATH OF MR ELKINS-GREEN.

We regret to announce the death of Mr Eli Thomas Elkins-Green, dental surgeon, which took place at half-past nine on Saturday night at his residence, 3, Grange Terrace.

Mr Elkins-Green was taken ill on Easter Monday. The symptoms did not appear dangerous, and the family were quite unprepared for the end. An active and vigorous out-door life during his earlier years and a studious life during more recent years had, however, left Mr Elkins-Green's heart affected. The deceased gentleman was in his fifty-fifth year and came to Sunderland 16 years ago. He was the son of Mr Joseph Coghlan Green, surgeon, of Northampton, and a direct descendant of an old English family, the Greens of Green's Norton.

He was a well-known member of the Wearside Golf Club. Although a staunch Conservative, he did not take any active part in politics or municipal affairs. When a young man cricket was his favourite pastime, and he was a prominent member of the Northamptonshire Cricket Club. He was a man of retiring nature, and was known to his friends as kindly and clever. The funeral will take place at the Bishopwearmouth Cemetery tomorrow.

Mr Elkins-Green leaves a widow and two sons and one daughter.

• Will: 21 Apr 1906, Probate - Durham. 317 Eli left his entire estate to his wife Alice. This amounted to £8365. 3. 1d which was resworn at £7918.11.0d

141 M    iii. Edmund Kirby Green was born on 9 Jul 1852 in High Street, Towcester and died on 10 Jun 1882 in 17 Prince's Street, Northampton 318 at age 29.

General Notes: Like Eli, Edmund began a dental apprenticeship with Mr Goddard in Northampton but for some reason or other gave up after a while and went to work in the shoe trade for which Northampton was then well known. By 1881 he was a "clicker".

A "clicker" was a person who worked in the shoe trade cutting out the uppers and was also the person who made the shoelace holes.

143 F    v. Emma Amelia Kate Green was born on 24 Oct 1857 in 17 Prince's Street, Northampton and died on 18 Jan 1922 at age 64.

John next married Charlotte Woodward,290 daughter of James Richard William John Pollard Woodward and Charlotte Richardson, in 1871 in Northampton.227 Charlotte was born in 1841 in Stamford, Lincolnshire.320,325

General Notes: Charlotte first husband was Henry Chafer who described himself as a cattle dealer at the time of the 1861 Census; he died in Northampton in 1870 having been married to Charlotte barely four years. How Charlotte met Henry, who came from near Hull, is a bit of a mystery; perhaps Henry travelled a lot in his cattle dealing and had got to know the Woodward family through Charlotte's father.

Charlotte's father, James, was an auctioneer and some time innkeeper (as indeed was Charlotte's maternal grandfather William Richardson) and she, herself, kept an inn called the Woolpack in Northampton prior to her marriage to John Kirby; it may well be that she kept the Woolpack during the time she was married Henry and that could be the reason why Henry moved from Yorkshire to settle in Northampton.

Before she was married, Charlotte and her sister Mary Ann had taught music when they were living at home with their father.

General Notes: Edmund & his family's whereabouts after 1881 is a complete mystery. He, Harriet and all the children disappear from Northamptonshire and, as far as can be ascertained, from England, sometime in the 1880s. One of Edmund's nieces (a daughter of J. M. Kirby) writing to her cousin, Kate Green, in 1908 says that Edmund died sometime around 1890 but she does not say where. No evidence has been found of his death in the General Register of Deaths in England between 1881 & 1910 or of any Will that he made, so perhaps, he died overseas after having emigrated to somewhere like Australia, Canada or New Zealand.

Edmund married Harriet Jane Sanders,327 daughter of William Wilkins Sanders and Martha Elizabeth Bliss, in 1865 in Potterspury, Northants.234 Harriet was born in 1843 in Yardley Gobion, Northants..233,331
