1. William Kilpin was buried on 16
Aug 1707 in St Peter's Church, Stoke Goldington, Bucks. 1
General Notes: Some time Woodman and Victualler at Stoke Goldington, Bucks.
Some things about his life:
• Will signed: 5 Jul 1707, Stoke Goldington,
Bucks. 2 William left this intriguingly
spelt Will, which has been transcribed has it was written. Though he signed
his name with some style, it is not clear from the original document whether
or not he wrote the Will himself. The spelling & irregular writing
suggests he might have done because a professional writer would probably
have been tidier and more accurate (despite the flexibility in spelling
in those days):

Nicholas was a grazier.
Some things about his life:
• Will signed: 14 Jan 1799, Stoke Goldington,
Buckingham, England. 49 Nicholas
made Joseph Elkins, his son-in-law, the sole executor of his Will and left
him the residue of his estate after payment of the following legacies:-
£150 to his granddaughter Mary Elkins, £200 to his grandnephew
William Tompkins, £10 to his nephew Stephen Kilpin, £20 to
his housekeeper Susanna Tobby and £10 to her brother, and £10
to a friend?, one William Clark of Hanslop, a wheelwright.
Comment: It is interesting that Nicholas chose only Mary Elkins out
of all his grandchildren to be a beneficiary of his Will; he must have had
a particularly warm spot for her, his first grandchild.
Nicolas married Mary Tarry , daughter
of William Tarry and Unknown , on 14 Apr 1768 in Gayhurst,
Bucks..45 Mary was buried on 6
Sep 1776 in Gayhurst, Bucks.. 52

38 F iv. Sarah

34. Mary Kilpin
53 was baptized on 10 Oct 1770
in Gayhurst, Bucks. 54
and was buried on 25 Nov 1820 in Gayhurst, Bucks.. 55
General Notes: Mary and her cousin Mary Tarry were the main beneficiaries of her grandfather William Tarry's, Will. Her legacy being £100 and a half share of the rent from certain property in North Crawley. One of her great-granddaughters later (1906) described her as being an "heiress" so there was obviously a family legend about her wealth.
Mary married Joseph Elkins ,59,60 son of William Elkins and Elizabeth Sheen , on 1 Dec 1791 in Gayhurst, Bucks..56 Joseph was born in 1767, 59 died in Great Linford, Bucks,, and was buried on 23 Jan 1830 in Gayhurst, Bucks.. 61
Marriage Notes: Joseph seems to have brought
non-conformist religious beliefs to the marriage as all his and Mary's children
were baptised in the recently established Independent Chapel in nearby Newport
Pagnell and not in their local parish church of Gayhurst. Interestingly
enough, the children's dates birth were at some time recorded en bloc in
the parish register of Gayhurst.
General Notes: There is no record of what Joseph
did in Gayhurst but most likely he either assisted his father-in-law as
a grazier or was one on his own account. Whatever the case, Joseph was
the residual beneficiary of his father-in-law's Will and that inheritance
combined with his wife's inheritance from her grandfather probably made
them quite comfortably off. Sadly, Joseph left no Will so it has not been
possible to assess his worth.
It is strange, given the tradition of the Elkinses in the matter of Wills,
that Joseph appears to have died intestate, the more so, because no one
applied for a grant of administration to take over any of his assets after
his death. One explanation of this may be that he made over all his assets
to his eldest son Eli before he died and therefore there would have been
no need to make a Will. As one of his granddaughters is quoted as saying
that he "used to swing on the gate with the children" by which she was implying
that he was childish in his ways, it may be, therefore, that his mental
faculties had deteriorated to such an extent in later life that he was incapable
of running his affairs.
Joseph, Mary and their unmarried children seem to have continued to live
in Gayhurst until Mary died in 1820, after that the family moved to Great
Linford where they acquired or took on a farm of about 370 acres. By then
Joseph was in his fifties and he, Eli and Thomas probably ran the farm until
Joseph became unable to play an active part, thereafter Eli and Thomas ran
it until the end of their lives.
